Most households make use of leftover rice from yesterday (as long as it is still fresh and edible) and prepare the fried rice for breakfast.
Sure enough, a serving of fried rice is very easy to make. But how about if you are making over 3,000 kg of this dish? That’s over 6,000 lbs and can feed so many people!
Bolu, Turkey: Largest Fried Rice
Back in September of 2014 in Bolu, Turkey, the Turkey Culinary Federation achieved the Guinness World Record for the largest serving of fried rice. They cooked fried rice enough to weigh 3,150 kg or 6,945 lbs. Its ingredients included 1,125 kg of rice, 1,350 liters of water, 135 kg of oil, 135 kg of butter, 180 kg of lamb meat, 180 kg of mushrooms, 36 kg of peas, 45 kg of walnut, 45 kg of salt, 9 kg of black pepper, 9 kgs of dill, and 4.5 kg of allspice. That’s enough for everyone to have a second serving!
It took 20 chefs laboring for about 5 hours to make the giant dish. This was back in 2014, however, a more interesting story happened a year later in Yangzhou, China.
Yangzhou, China: Largest Fried Rice?
Back in October 22, 2015, organizers in Yangzhou, China attempted to break the record set by Turkey for the world’s largest bowl of fried rice. This was done as part of their celebration of their 2,500th anniversary. It is important to note that Yangzhou is known for their fried rice, the Yangzhou fried rice.
Chefs prepared a bowl of fried rice so big that it weighed over 4000 kg or 9000 lbs.
However, the humongous dish was disqualified when officials learned that it was not fit for human consumption and so violated Guinness rules. This is because some of the rice turned bad after many hours in the cooker.
According to a statement by the Guinness’ marketing director in greater China, Sharon Yang, following guidelines means that for all large food records, all of the food items must be completely edible for humans. This is why, the giant fried rice from Yangzhou, although admittedly bigger and heavier than that of Bolu, could still not claim the title of world’s largest fried rice.
Adding to her statement, Sharon Yang said that the food item must be distributed or donated for general consumption. In this case, the giant inedible fried rice could not be fed to humans.
What then happened to the fried rice?
Witnesses posted videos of workers shoveling and dumping the fried rice into a truck. Officials and organizers of the event said that they discarded the top layer of the fried rice because it was not sanitary or fit for humans. They said the fried rice, or at least the top layer of it, was sent to farms to be fed to pigs. An estimate of 150 kg of fried rice was fed to the pigs.
Many netizens were angry with the handling of the record attempt as it showed to be a great waste of money and food. According to CNN.com, it is estimated that the record breaking attempt cost close to $22,000.
With China’s title being revoked, the record for the world’s largest bowl of fried rice is still held by the Turkey Culinary Federation in Bolu, Turkey.
